Chronic migraines or severe headaches are sometimes caused by dental problems. Bruxism, sleep apnea, and crooked teeth have symptoms connected to headaches and can be treated by the Montclair Plaza Dental Group. Learn about these dental problems and their solutions below:

Bruxism

Chronic headaches can be a symptom of bruxism, which is characterized by teeth clenching and grinding. Bruxism occurs during sleep or in stressful situations. This can cause headaches and chronic migraines, as well as tooth pain, muscle soreness, and tooth sensitivity. In the most severe cases of bruxism, teeth can become damaged and may fall out. Oral appliance therapy is used to treat bruxism. Oral appliances act like mouth guards and are custom-fit to patients for comfortable treatment. They prevent teeth from touching and prevent further tooth damage.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition caused by soft tissues that can block the airways during sleep. Patients with sleep apnea often wake up with headaches and may also feel chronic fatigue or irritability. Sleep apnea can also be treated with oral appliances, which open up the airways for a more restful night of sleep. The lower jaw is moved forward and the tissues in the back of the throat relax when the oral appliance is worn. Oral appliances are easy to use, comfortable, and convenient.

Crooked Teeth

Patients with crooked teeth may suffer from headaches. Those with a misaligned bite or crooked teeth are at a higher risk for bruxism which can wear teeth down. It can be difficult to clean the space between teeth when they are crooked. Bacteria can easily multiply in hard to reach spaces, forming plaque and tartar. Crooked teeth can be treated with Invisalign, which utilizes clear aligners that gradually shift teeth every two weeks. The aligners can be removed for eating and brushing teeth and tend to be more comfortable than traditional metal braces because they don’t irritate gums. Invisalign also works faster than traditional options and offer a shorter treatment time.
